Many people in medieval Western Europe desired to go on pilgrimage to Rome and on to Jerusalem. Not all could afford the cost and risks of such a journey. This talk reviews the fascinating range of buildings and works of art that replicated the holy sites to allow for spiritual pilgrimage closer to home.
