Nine best eateries around University College
Nine best eateries around University College
Written by Xanthe Barr Smith
Although all of your meals may be included at college, nothing beats an evening out and an excuse to explore with friends. During my time at college, it became very obvious to me that Melbourne is a foodies heaven! After taste-testing at as many places as I could, I have nailed down my top nine places in the area around the residential colleges in Parkville.
Green Refectory
I discovered ‘Green’ (as it is lovingly known) during my second week of college while on the hunt for a classic, affordable, homemade cafe meal. It’s only a five minute tram ride away in Brunswick and it’s incredible.
The passionfruit sponge is to die for and my go-to order every time. The menu at Green has a bit of everything – whether it’s eggs and bacon or a huge bowl of soup, you’ll be able to select something from the four big chalkboards. To finish off with something sweet, there’s fresh cakes in the counter.
Naughty Boy Cafe
If you are a bruncher, Naughty Boy is a quick stroll away through Princess Park and just oh so colourful!
I was in awe of the green burger buns, red velvet waffles and turmeric lattes. However, there is no way you could ever go past the Waffle Benny - my absolute favourite! Delish!
Naughty Boy Cafe
F.A.T. (Fried and Tasty)
F.A.T. is epic. If you love fried chicken and burgers, please do yourself a favour and visit this wondrous establishment. This American style diner also has a faux meat burger for vegetarians and vegans.
P.S. You’ll want to go with an empty stomach!

Empress of China
If you’re running low on funds but desperate to eat out, Empress of China is your best friend.
15 pan-fried dumplings for $7.50 – YES PLEASE!
It’s located in Chinatown and is usually quite busy in the evenings, so get there early or head over for lunch instead.

Tiamo
Lygon Street is a famous destination for amazing Italian cuisine and Tiamo is by far my favourite. It’s cozy, friendly and always bustling with people. I can guarantee that you will feel all the warm and fuzzy feelings in your stomach (and your soul) after a feed at Tiamo!
Pidapipo
One word – OBSESSED. The Italian-style gelato is so creamy and authentic, it’s worth every penny. They use fresh fruit and make the gelato from scratch on site. The lines often extend right around the street corner, so consider yourself warned! Orders on Uber Eats
Yo-Chi
Fancy some frozen yoghurt? I know I certainly do, all the time… check out Yo-chi on Lygon St.
This guilty pleasure is close to college and features gluten-free, diary-free and vegan fro-yo options. Pick the toppings of your choice and your dinner (I meant dessert) is served
Lune Croissanterie
The rumours are true, Lune does make and sell the best croissants and pastries in Melbourne. Is the potential two-hour queue worth it? I’d say so, however avoid weekends if you want to try and dodge long wait times.
Anyway, who said you can’t indulge in a sweet, buttery pastry while strolling the streets of Fitzroy on a weekday?
Los Hermanos Mexican Taqueria
This has to be my favourite of all of my recommendations. Los Hermanos is a tiny Mexican restaurant hidden away on Victoria Street in Brunswick, just off Sydney Road. They serve a variety of delicious, traditional Mexican food and drink.
Try the fish taco - you will not be disappointed!
