As we head into exam season, it’s pretty normal to start feeling overwhelmed by revision, deadlines, and the pressure to stay productive. Libraries get busier, group chats start filling up with stress, and suddenly it feels like there’s not enough time to get everything done.

When exams start getting closer, it can be tempting to spend every spare moment studying. But effective exam prep isn’t about studying constantly – it’s more about consistency, balance, and finding techniques that actually work for you. Spending hours at your desk without proper breaks can often lead to burnout, stress, and trouble concentrating, which can make studying even harder.

The good news is that a few small habits can make a big difference during the exam period.

Here are a few practical study tips that might help:

Create a study plan:

Breaking revision into smaller tasks across the week can make things feel much more manageable. Instead of telling yourself to “study for the exam,” try setting smaller goals like reviewing one topic, making summary notes, or completing practice questions. Using a planner, calendar, or even a basic to-do list can help you stay organised and avoid last-minute panic.

Use focused study sessions:

Techniques like the Pomodoro method – 25 minutes of focused work followed by a short break – can help with concentration and motivation. Studying in shorter bursts is often more effective than trying to force yourself to focus for hours at a time.

Find a study space that works for you:

Spaces like the library or tute rooms can help minimise distractions and get you into more of a “study mindset.” At the same time, everyone studies differently. Some people prefer complete silence, while others focus better around other people or with background noise.

Use the support around you:

Study groups, classmates, and Academic Tutors can all help if you’re stuck on difficult content or struggling to stay motivated. Sometimes just studying alongside other people can make things feel less stressful and isolating.

Try different revision techniques:

Practice questions, flashcards, diagrams, summaries, and discussion-based learning all work differently depending on the person. There’s no single “right” way to study, so it’s worth experimenting to find what helps information stick for you.

Look after yourself as well:

Sleep, exercise, regular meals, and downtime all have a huge impact on focus, memory, and stress levels. Taking breaks or spending time with friends isn’t “wasting time” – it’s an important part of avoiding burnout during busy periods.

Exam season can be stressful, and sometimes isolating, but it’s important to remember that support is available if you need it. If you’re struggling during exams, don’t forget you can always reach out to Steph, Katie, or one of our Youth Support Workers.

Most importantly, remember that everybody studies differently. Some students love strict schedules and detailed plans, while others prefer a more flexible routine. The goal during exam season isn’t to study perfectly – it’s to find strategies that help you stay productive without completely exhausting yourself in the process.
