UC Traditions Uncovered: Annual Events and Experiences at University College
University College is so much more than just student accommodation. It is a community built around traditions, shared experiences and opportunities to get involved. From your very first day, the college calendar is filled with events that help you make friends, develop new skills and create lifelong memories.
Your First Weeks at UC
N Week: Preparing Student Leaders
Before new residents arrive, an elected group of second-year student leaders, or as we call them - O-Week Leaders (OWLs), return to campus for N Week. This leadership program prepares O-Week Leaders (OWLs) to create a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for incoming students.
Through workshops, meetings and training sessions, the OWLs learn about wellbeing, diversity, inclusion, health and safety, and the unique challenges students may face when moving into college. Every leader has experienced the transition to college and university themselves, making them well equipped to support new residents as they settle into life at UC.
Welcome Saturday and O-Week
Welcome Saturday is the official move in day for the college year and kicks off O-Week! Staff and O-Week Leaders will be on hand, ready to welcome you and calm any nerves. Moving into University College is an exciting milestone, and Welcome Saturday marks the beginning of your UC journey.
O-Week is packed with activities both on campus and around Melbourne. In previous years, students have enjoyed Amazing Race challenges, scavenger hunts, bush dancing, silent discos and city adventures. There are also opportunities to learn about university life, hear advice from returning students and receive support with everything from enrolling in classes to finding your way around campus.
By the end of O-Week, the aim is for you to develop a sense of belonging and you'll probably already have friendships forming. But if you haven’t, not to worry, there are still plenty of opportunities to get to know each other throughout the semester!
Community Service and Wellbeing
Wellbeing Week
Looking after your wellbeing is an important part of life at UC. Each year, Wellbeing Week offers a range of activities designed to help residents relax and recharge during semester. These activities are organised in collaboration with the Student Wellbeing Coordinator and the Student Wellbeing Representative.
Past events have included mat Pilates, yoga, painting sessions, matcha stations, live music, therapy animals and other student-led activities focused on physical and mental wellbeing.
R U OK? Day
UC also recognises R U OK? Day with a community afternoon tea that encourages meaningful conversations about mental health. It's an opportunity to connect with others, learn about support services and check in with friends during the busy university year.
Charity Fundraisers
Giving back is an important part of the UC community. We have a Community Services Student Representative elected on the student council every year and throughout the year, they, along with residents, organise fundraising events for a variety of causes, including events like the World's Greatest Shave and Colour Run that raise both awareness and funds while bringing the college together.
Intercollegiate Events
Sporting Competitions
You don’t have to be an experienced athlete to get involved in sport at UC. It’s a great opportunity to put your hat in the ring and have a go. Intercollegiate sport is a highlight of the UC calendar and students compete in many events such as rowing, athletics, swimming, tennis, hockey, netball, basketball, volleyball and many other sports throughout the year. All students are actively encouraged to go and cheer along the UC sport teams and there is a great sense of community at these events. Sometimes being part of the cheer squad can be just as fun as being in the team itself.
Step Up
For those who prefer performing arts, Step Up is a fun and energetic intercollegiate dance competition. Residents come together to rehearse, perform and cheer on their fellow students, creating an incredible sense of college spirit.
Dinner Swaps
Dinner swaps offer a more relaxed opportunity to meet students from neighbouring colleges. These informal evenings allow residents to experience different college communities while expanding their social circles.
Intercollegiate Trivia
Trivia nights bring students from across the residential colleges together for a friendly competition filled with laughs, teamwork and plenty of college rivalry.
Creative Life at UC
Art and Design Week
Art and Design Week celebrates the creative talents of UC residents. Students can submit work across a range of categories including visual art, photography, music, creative writing and design, with prizes awarded across multiple disciplines.
Annual Production
Each year, students stage a fully student-led theatre production at the University of Melbourne’s Union Theatre. Whether you're interested in acting, singing, backstage production, lighting, costumes or ushering, there's an opportunity for everyone to get involved.
Soirées
Regular soirées showcase the musical and artistic talents of residents in a relaxed setting. These evenings combine live performances with refreshments, making them a favourite event throughout the year.
Social Traditions
UC Ball
One of the biggest events on the social calendar, the UC Ball gives residents the opportunity to dress up, enjoy a formal dinner and celebrate with friends.
UC Day
UC Day is a chance for the college community to come together and celebrate everything that makes University College unique through a range of fun activities and traditions.
Boat Cruise
The annual boat cruise is a popular social event that lets residents experience Melbourne from the water while enjoying an evening with friends.
Internal Trivia Nights
Student-run trivia nights are held throughout the year, bringing together teams for an evening of friendly competition.
‘TERNS’
‘Terns’ (short for internal parties) are themed, student-organised parties that have become a much-loved UC tradition. They’re a chance to dress up, socialise and enjoy the vibrant college community.
Formal College Traditions
Commencement
The academic year officially begins with Commencement, welcoming new residents into the University College community with a reception in the Giblin Courtyard followed by dinner in the Syme Dining Hall.
Signing of the Roll
One of UC's long-standing traditions is the Signing of the Roll. New residents sign the college roll as a symbolic welcome into the community and to mark the beginning of their time at University College.
Monday High Table
Every Monday, residents gather for High Table, another longstanding tradition that brings the college together for a formal dinner. It's an opportunity to connect with fellow residents, staff and guests while celebrating the strong sense of community at UC. There will often be guest speakers, visitors from the university and announcements from staff and students.
Pathways Dinner
The Pathways Dinner connects students with alumni and professionals from a wide range of industries, providing valuable networking opportunities and career insights as students prepare for life after university.
Valedictory Dinner
Valedictory (known affectionately as "Val") marks the end of the academic year and celebrates graduating and departing residents. It's a chance to reflect on the year, acknowledge achievements and farewell members of the UC community.
